Should You Get A Chew Proof Dog House?

blue wooden dog house in snowy landscape

I’m just gonna put it out there: Before you spend any money on a chew proof dog house, try providing your dog with another outlet for their chewing. Think of a chew proof dog house as your last resort.

Why? Because chewing is a natural behaviour in dogs. Puppies do it to ease teething pain, and adult dogs do it to keep their jaws strong. To have a happy and healthy dog, you actually want to provide your dog with chewing opportunities!

This can be in the form of chewing toys or chewing treats. Give your dog the chance to please the chewing urge with toys and treats and you may just realise that you don’t need a chew proof dog house anymore!

Do You Already Have A Dog House? Try A Now Chew Spray!

If you already have a dog house that your dog only just started chewing on, you might still be able to save it before you spend lots of money on a chew proof dog house!

I’ll be honest, it doesn’t work with every dog, but a good amount of dog owners I know have had success with no-chew sprays. The idea behind them is pretty simple: you spray the dog house with it, and because of the bitter taste, your dog will stop chewing on it. Click here to check the latest price on Amazon.

Dog Chewing Toys You Can Try

Give your dog a chewing toy and see if you can redirect the chewing behaviour away from unwanted items. Many dog chewing toys come with a special flavour to pick your dog’s interest. I like to not leave anything up to chance and always rub a little bit of peanut butter or yogurt on new chewing toys!

The Benebone Dog Chew Toy for example is made in the USA & infused with real chicken flavour. Click here to check the latest price on Amazon.

If your dog is not a hardcore chewer, rope toys can do a good job too. Especially if you can provide your dog with an interesting variety. Click here to check the latest price on Amazon.

Chew Proof Dog House

If you decide that you really do need a chew proof dog house (no judgement, we’ve all been there), it’s best to look for a dog house made of thick, sturdy walls. I’ll link some recommendations below. Note that depending on your dog’s urge to chew, you might still see some damage in the dog house, no matter how sturdy the material (a lot can be prevented though with great materials).
